Menopause, Meet Neu Phase: Empowering women through natural solutions
Share
Natural menopause is defined as the absence of menses (‘periods’) for 12 consecutive months, a result of the decline in oestrogen levels due to the normal ageing process. Menopause usually occurs between the ages of 44–55 years of age, although 1 in 100 women may experience menopause prior to 40 years of age. In addition, menopause can be induced in women at an earlier age as a result of surgery, serious illness or medication.
Researchers estimate by the year 2030, 1.2 billion women will be at the menopausal and postmenopausal age. In countries where the population is ageing, one third of a woman’s life is spent in the perimenopausal, menopausal or post-menopausal phases of life.
For many women, this change is liberating, freeing them from anxieties about childbearing, and from pain or discomfort related to their reproductive organs. In contrast, some women may view menopause negatively, associating it with aging, which in most Western cultures has significant negative connotations. However, it is viewed, the menopausal transition is accompanied by a multitude of symptoms and health considerations that may affect almost all women.
One of the greatest challenges to healthcare professionals is that although there are classic “menopause symptoms,” there is no classic patient. As women go through the menopause transition, they are also getting older, and there is a significant overlap between symptoms occurring with aging and symptoms related to a loss of oestrogen
While menopause is a natural change that marks the end of a female’s reproductive phase, for some women, its symptoms can be life changingly demanding. Sudden hot flushes, night sweats, insomnia, fatigue and brain fog descend on women, and while many can handle these changes, others experience symptoms so intense that they disrupt work and daily activities. Sometimes these symptoms can create a domino effect that eventually undermines a woman’s confidence in herself.
For example, where night sweats and insomnia can often result in a sleep deficit that could cause depression, hot flushes during the day may spur embarrassment and anxiety, whilst memory problems can further lead to life disorganisation. Hence, the menopause leaves many women bewildered and wanting a way to manage their symptoms.
Whist many women are prescribed Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) as the first line of treatment, it is contraindicated for some and shunned by many owing to concerns about increased risk of cancer and heart disease. Though this risk may be minimal for managing menopause symptoms in the short term, the concern is widespread enough that many women will forgo HRT, opting instead for non-medical or non-hormonal options.
